Security Instruction
Security instruction for Skydeck at Willis Tower consists of two screens, Prohibited Items, and Screening Process. This exhibit aims at using fun and intuitive animation in a style that best represents Chicago to give the visitors a warm and welcoming feeling and, at the same time, instruct them to follow security checking procedures.
Role: Style Frames, Storyboarding, Illustrator, Character Design

Deliverable: 2 Animated Loop Videos
Duration: 3 months

Screen 1: Screen Process
Screen Process uses color hints and fun characters to showcase the security checking process.
1.1 Storyboards
The key was to make sure that the style facilitates modularity of the content and also presents information simultaneously without being overwhelming.
Main characters:
/ A Man in coat with a luggage
/ A teenager with a backpack and an umbrella (originally skateboard)
/ A lady in heels and belt and with a handbag
/ A young man in a wheelchair
/ An elderly with a crutch and camera
/ The security staff with a hand wand.
1.2 Initial Style Test
To find the best style that works for the Willis Tower, I’ve explored multiple graphic styles in the early stage and analyzed each styles’ pros and cons.
1.3 Style Frames
Considering Chicago is a city covered with graffiti arts, I’ve added graffiti elements, i.e., brush strokes, spray noise, shadows, etc., into the graphic style, which better represents the Chicago aspect of Willis Tower.
*Color tricks:
1. RED items goes on the belt
2. GREEN items pass straight through
1.4 Takeaway
To see whether the film demonstrates the security check process clearly, we’ve run screen tests on 21 people, and below are the results.
Screen 2: Prohibited Items
Prohibited Items uses friendly-looking and intuitive icons to demonstrate items that are prohibited inside the observatory.
2.1 Storyboards
Prohibited Items:
1. Firearms
2. Alcohols
3. Drugs
4. Knifes
